Weight of Gold

Gold is a malleable, heavy, naturally occurring element. It is about 19 times
heavier than the same volume of water. Gold is found in hard rock known as lode,
or as pieces which have broken away from their source and traveled some distance.
Such gold is known as placer.

The most common measure of weight in the United States and Britain is
called avoirdupois. However precious metals are measured in troy weight. The
following charts are courtesy of Roger Muir from the Prospector Supply/Orem, Utah.

15.432 grains (gr) = 1 gram (gm)
24 grains = 1 pennyweight (dwt)
20 pennyweight = 1 troy ounce (oz)
12 troy ounces = 1 troy pound (LB)
